Large FrameMaker files in SDL Trados Studio 2011

SDL XLIFF validation errors during translation of large MIF files

While preparing a large translation project with FrameMaker 10 files in SDL Trados Studio 2011 the software showed errors when analyzing and pre-translating larger FrameMaker MIF files (30 MB):

However, after analysis and pre-translation the bilingual SDL XLIFF files could be opened and edited in the translation editor. But when trying to save the target files back in MIF format SDL Trados Studio 2011 showed the following error:

The target MIF file was saved but was incomplete and could not be opened in FrameMaker.
Saving as FrameMaker 9 MIF files and translating these instead of version 10 MIF files didn't solve the problem.

Solution

The problem could be solved by changing the options for the SDL Xliff file type via the menu Tools > Options > File types > SDLXLIFF > General. In this section there was an option defining the maximum size for embeddng the original source file into the SDLXLIFF file. The default value was set to 20 MB. But as some FrameMaker MIF files were larger than 20 MB this seemed to be causing the problem with the SDL XLIFF file.

Once changed the parameter to 100 MB the large FrameMaker files could be processed without a problem.
