Certification

Nowadays, various factors result in the fact that the translation process can become very complex. This may be due to any of the following:

European legislation

In principal, at least, every product shipped to a foreign country must be accompanied by a set of instructions in the language of that country.

Usage of computer technologies

Increasing use of tools for computer-aided translation, terminology management and document management, plus the drastically increasing number of different file formats and computer systems in use.

The number of people involved in projects

This can range from the editor or project manager at the customer’s premises and the project manager at the language service provider’s office to external freelancers, proof-readers and other specialists. The more people there are who are involved in a project, the more likely it is that mistakes will be made. This potentially damaging factor can be minimized by defining a clean process and monitoring conformity to it.

The goal of certification

A quality-management system should be implemented that is based on documented processes or quality-management guidelines. This should meet the EN 15038 standard on "Translation Services – service requirements" as well as taking the above-mentioned factors into account.

How LICS® works

The goal of LICS® is to harmonize certification for translation service providers. This is achieved by means of a certification scheme (DE) that is binding for all LICS® certification partners.

A detailed description of the basic requirements, preparations for the audit and practical implementation of the scheme is available in a German brochure entitled  "Mehrwert durch Zertifizierung".

LICS® certification process

The LICS® EN 15038 certification process involves the following steps:

  • submitting an application
  • presenting your documents
  • conducting the LICS® audit
  • reviewing the outcome of the audit and issuing the certificate
  • monitoring audits or follow-up audits
